Flood Warning downgraded to Flood Watch

Issued:  4:30 p.m., Tuesday January 14, 2025

Subject:  The Flood Warning issued for the Otonabee River on Thursday January 9^th, 2025, has been downgraded to a FLOOD WATCH.

Issued to: Municipalities of Selwyn, Douro-Dummer, Asphodel-Norwood, Otonabee-South Monaghan, Cavan Monaghan, City of Kawartha Lakes, City of Peterborough, Trent Hills, and ORCA’s other partners in flood emergency management.

Weather: A slow-moving low-pressure system will bring flurries and warmer air temperatures for Wednesday through Saturday. A mass of cold air is forecasted to push its way into our region on Saturday night, bringing a return to extremely low air temperatures in the minus 20s for Sunday and into next week.

Flood Risk: With the reduced water levels and warmer air temperatures the affects of the frazil ice have diminished, and the previous flooding conditions have subsided. However, with the return of extremely cold air temperatures on Saturday night through next week, there is potential for frazil ice generation that may result in ice jamming, increased water levels and the possibility of flooding.

Actions: Municipalities, Indigenous communities, local water managers, emergency services and residents are advised to monitor conditions and prepare for potential flooding. Water levels can be monitored at Trent-Severn Waterway, Water Survey of Canada and Otonabee Conservation websites. If water levels are observed to be rising because of frazil ice accumulations, populations in affected areas are advised to move personal property from low lying areas, crawl spaces and basements to prevent damage.

This FLOOD WATCH message will expire Wednesday, January 22nd, 2025, at 3:00pm unless up-dated earlier.
