Flood Warning issued January 9, 2025

Subject: The Flood Watch issued for the Otonabee River on Monday January 6^th, 2025, is upgraded to a FLOOD WARNING.

Issued to: Municipalities of Selwyn, Douro-Dummer, Asphodel-Norwood, Otonabee-South Monaghan, Cavan Monaghan, City of Kawartha Lakes, City of Peterborough, Trent Hills, and ORCA’s other partners in flood emergency management.

Weather: With the recent influx of extreme cold air temperatures and wind chill, combined with a lack of insulating ice cover and fast-moving water through the Otonabee River, frazil ice has been forming north of the Wallace Point bridge and accumulating along the shoreline of the river.

Flood Risk: The accumulation of frazil ice has caused a restriction of water flow, resulting in increased water levels and possible flooding. Water levels are expected to increase throughout the weekend. Flooding is occurring or imminent on the Otonabee River.

Actions: Municipalities, Indigenous communities, local water managers, emergency services and residents along the Otonabee River are strongly encouraged to monitor conditions and prepare for potential flooding and to take actions to protect themselves and to limit or prevent damages. Water levels can be monitored at Trent-Severn Waterway, Water Survey of Canada and Otonabee Conservation websites. If water levels are observed to be rising because of frazil ice accumulations, populations in affected areas are advised to move personal property from low lying areas, crawl spaces and basements to higher ground to avoid it getting wet or ice damaged.

This FLOOD WARNING message will expire Wednesday January 15th, 2025, unless up-dated earlier.
