FLOOD WATCH - Issued August 8th, 2024
Message # 2024-13
Issued: 11:45 a.m., Thursday August 08, 2024
FLOOD WATCH - Issued for all waterbodies and watercourses within the jurisdiction of Otonabee Conservation.
Issued to: Municipalities of Selwyn, Douro-Dummer, Asphodel-Norwood, Otonabee-South Monaghan, Cavan Monaghan, City of Kawartha Lakes, City of Peterborough and Trent Hills, local water managers, and Otonabee Conservation’s other partners in flood emergency management.
This FLOOD WATCH is issued to alert municipalities, residents, and businesses in flood-prone areas that the potential for flooding exists within all waterbodies and watercourses in the Otonabee Region Watershed.
Weather: Rain is expected to start this afternoon, Thursday, August 8, 2024, and total rainfall over the next 48-hours is expected to be 40-50 mm, including periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms due to remnants of Tropical Storm Debby interacting with a low-pressure system. Rainfall amounts may be higher (50-100mm) if the storm follows a more northerly path and showers are forecast to continue from Saturday through Monday.
Hydrology: In flood-prone areas, heavy rainfall in a short period of time may result in nuisance to minor flooding.
Actions: Municipalities and residents of flood-prone areas are advised to be prepared for potential flooding and stay aware of local weather conditions and alerts over the next 48 hours. Recreational water users are urged to remain cautious due to high water levels and flows that will persist throughout the weekend and into early next week.
Water levels can be monitored on-line at:
1) Trent-Severn Waterway’s Water Management InfoNet
2) Water Survey of Canada Real-Time Hydrometric Data
3) Otonabee Region Conservation Authority website
This FLOOD WATCH message will expire Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at 3 p.m., unless updated earlier.
