FLOOD WATCH issued August 29th, 2024

Message # 2024-15

Issued:  3:15 p.m., Thursday August 29, 2024

This FLOOD WATCH is issued for all watercourses within the jurisdiction of Otonabee Conservation, except the Trent-Severn Waterway, because the potential for flooding exists within local watercourses and municipalities.

Municipalities of Selwyn, Douro-Dummer, Asphodel-Norwood, Otonabee-South Monaghan, Cavan Monaghan, City of Kawartha Lakes, City of Peterborough, Trent Hills, Indigenous communities, local water managers, emergency services and individual landowners should take appropriate preparations and monitor conditions.

Weather:  During the Labour Day weekend, rainfall and moderate to strong thunderstorms could bring flood-inducing heavy downpours to the region.

Starting Friday, August 30th, and continuing into Saturday, August 31st, a moisture-laden warm air mass will bring widespread rainfall and thunderstorms. These thunderstorms could produce heavy rain with rainfall rates of 30 to 50 mm per hour. Total rainfall for the event, not including thunderstorms, is expected to be 40-50 mm. Thunderstorms could produce higher local amounts.

No significant weather is forecast for Sunday, September 1st, or Monday, September 2nd.

Flood Risk: Heavy rain, falling in a short period of time, could result in nuisance to minor flooding in flood-prone areas, and water pooling on roads and in low-lying areas.

As a result, municipalities, Indigenous communities, local water managers, emergency services and individual landowners are advised to prepare for potential flooding and to monitor conditions, including weather alerts and weather radar for the specific location and severity of rainfall. Water levels can be monitored at Trent-Severn Waterway, Water Survey of Canada and Otonabee Conservation websites.

Recreational water users are urged to remain cautious of high, turbulent and fast water levels and flows that will persist throughout the weekend and into early next week.

This FLOOD WATCH message will expire Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at 3 p.m., unless updated earlier.
