Otonabee Conservation announces new name for Conservation Area
Peterborough, Ontario (November 25, 2024) The former gravel pit within Otonabee-South Monaghan Township now has a new name, The Mikinaak Conservation Area.
Mikinaak, meaning turtle in the Mississauga Ojibwe language, was chosen through a collaborative effort between Otonabee Conservation and Hiawatha First Nation.
"It has been a positive experience sharing Michi Saagiig knowledge with this project. Having it named in Michi Saagiig dialect acknowledges our historical footprint on these lands," said Tom Cowie, Core Consultation & Land Resource Development with Hiawatha First Nation.
Cowie worked with Otonabee Conservation staff on the renaming process, emphasizing that Indigenous place names are typically descriptive, reflecting both the land's features and what exists there.
In 2022, the property located in Otonabee-South Monaghan Township, was surrendered by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Foresty. Previously known simply as “the gravel pit,” the area was identified for its ecological importance and role as a habitat for species at risk, particularly for nesting turtles.
“The renaming of this conservation area is a meaningful step in recognizing the deep, historical connection that the Michi Saagiig Anishinaabe people have to this land. This partnership with Hiawatha First Nation is an example of our shared commitment to fostering a deeper understanding of the land we protect,” said Michael Metcalf, Chair, Board of Directors for the Otonabee Conservation Board of Directors.
