Subject: FLOOD WATCH - Issued for all waterbodies and watercourses within the jurisdiction of Otonabee Conservation.
Issued to: Municipalities of Selwyn, Douro-Dummer, Asphodel-Norwood, Otonabee-South Monaghan, Cavan Monaghan, City of Kawartha Lakes, City of Peterborough and Trent Hills, local water managers, and Otonabee Conservation’s other partners in flood emergency management.
This FLOOD WATCH definition: The potential for flooding exists within specific watercourses and municipalities. Municipalities, Indigenous communities, emergency services and individual landowners in flood-prone areas should take appropriate preparations and monitor conditions.
WEATHER: Environment Canada has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch stating conditions are favourable, this afternoon and evening (Wednesday July 24th) for the development of severe thunderstorms with the potential of producing torrential downpours with 50mm falling in less than one hour.
Heavy rainfall, in a short duration of time, from thunderstorms, could result in nuisance to minor flooding in flood-prone areas.
ACTIONS: Current weather forecasts suggest flooding of low-lying areas associated with watercourses are possible due to heavy rain associated with thunderstorms. Due to heavy rainfall, all watercourses within ORCA jurisdiction may experience higher than normal water levels and flows today.
Residents of flood-prone areas are advised to stay be prepared for potential flooding and stay aware of local weather conditions and alerts over the next 24 hours. Recreational water users are urged to remain cautious because high water levels and flows will continue through the weekend.
